Us gaming retailer GameStop is reported to have made another series of job cuts this week ahead of its quarterly earnings report on December 7th.

The layoffs affected multiple employees in GameStop’s blockchain division, according to Axios. The outlet reported that at least six employees working in engineering and e-commerce had been fired, but it was unclear how many people were affected in total.

In an internal email sent by CEO Matt Furlong, seen by Kotaku, he agreed with the “layoffs,” citing high inflation and “weakening consumer confidence” as reasons for the cuts.

“We recently completed several projects that were part of the initial phase of our transformation, enabling the business to operate with greater efficiency,” Furlong wrote. “In addition, we continue to figure out the appropriate level of company headcount needed to achieve our profitability and growth goals. Those two factors informed the decisions made by the entire company.”

This followed job cuts in July. In an internal announcement, GameStop management said at the time that “everyone in the organization must become more hands-on and accept a higher level of accountability for results.”

In the same report, it was revealed that the former chief financial officer, Mike Recupero, has left the company.

In its latest earnings report for the period ended July 30, GameStop posted its sixth straight quarterly loss, but reported that the retailer’s sales increased in the “transition quarter.”
